Okay so it’s a bit different to their other stuff but a great song in it’s own right. Pity the lyrics of the chorus are so ambiguous ‘are we human or are we dancer(denser)’.. it takes from the song a little .. great song, no less ..

its a great song
but its not dancer, its denser, it sounds like dancer the way he sings it but it is actually denser. are we human or are we dancer doesn’t make sence at all.
James | Nov 4, 2008 | Reply
The lyric is dancer.
The song is based on when some bloke who recruited loads of dancers ages ago. I dont know the full story but it was explained on a killers site, mightve been their myspace actually.

OMG my brother dont know what hes talkin about..
Read this.
It appears that Brandon Flowers, vocalist and keyboard player of the band has stated in an interview that the line “are we human, or are we dancer?” is a reference to a remark once made by the late Hunter S. Thompson, an ascerbic journalist famed for “telling it like it is”, often in offensive terms. He had commented that America is nowadays raising a “generation of dancers”. Thompson committed suicide in 2005.

I really love the killers and i’ve seen them live twice – most recently at Leeds fest 08 only a few months ago. I was so impressed by them live and I have always loved all their music before they were even very famous. However, this song is disappointing in my view. I know that they like to change their image and sound for each album, but this song is just like a dance tune. I think they have lost what made the Killers so great in their first ever singles. It is nothing special. The song does get stuck in your head but when I hear it on the radio I often just turn it off.
Lets hope the rest of the album might be a bit better :/

You’re a bunch of soft minded idiots!! I’m a professional Dancer from The Ukraine and this song undermines everything I have done up until this point. I was one the ‘performers’ in the background of the Mr. Brightside video and Brandon Flowers became besotted with me and hit on me quite heavily. He cornered me and he dry-humped me leg like a dog in heat. Then as I rebuffed him he turned on me and with his wicked tongue he accused me of being sub-human, nothing more that a ’show pony’ dancing-tease. And without breaking his licentious glare he proclaimed that one day he write a song that would reflect our encounter and ultimately ruin my pretty ass.
I ask you to listen once more to those litigious lyrics and draw your own conclusions on their origin. I’m about to go do something very silly. Goodbye cruel world.

are we human or are we dancer means we are raising a generation of dancers making people affaid of stepping out of place and following their own beat.people were only following steps they were taught, and were taught not to change them.in the song “sometimes i get nervous when i see an open door”by this itmeans he is afraid to take different opportunities when they are presented to him because living in the US has made us all afraid to go agaist what we thought of all our lives .qoute ..by hunter s.thompson

I think the lyrics are about death! “Dancing” can also mean dying and if you put this angle on the song, many of the lyrics fit.
Signs are vital, hands are cold, and the second verse about saying goodbye.

Anyway, I love this song and I really like it when artists are interested in the larger world around them and delve for deeper concepts and don’t just sing vacuous transparent rubbish. Please hug a friend today and spread some love around instead of more hatred.

Wow…this song is sucky!!! I saw this on a SNL rerun and the whole band is crap. You have a singer on crack, a guitar player stuck in the 80s and a bass player who shows not emotion…and a drummer who looks depressed. I thought his wife had just died or something. Plus who’s the underappreciated asian behind that wall…plus the lyrics really really…sucked….I mean this band is just trying to be different…but there’s a difference between different and plain stupid. I once had a discussion about music being objective with a friend whose also a philosophy professor. At first i didn’t really see eye to eye; thinking that music was mostly subjective. But either objective or subjective this song is a load of crap served by a man who wears endangered animal feathers, while using some kind of illegal substance.
so are we human or are we dancer? can we be both. i do like living and I do enjoy an occasional dance every now and again. The only thing i can think this even remotely suggests is that we need to not conform to past traditions and explore our human? Huh….oh well I’m being influenced to much by there crappy pseudo philosophy’s…if they want to try and be deep then they can get in a submarine that the Asian builds and die off in the middle of the ocean…and oh…I’ll be dancing
Oh and if you don’t like what I have to say then have fun spending all your money on music that doesn’t make sense…your just buying there old image.

Oh Christ, so I have to read friggin’ Hunter S. Thompson to understand this song? Maybe either a) the original line by Mr. Thompson was stupid to begin with or b) the badly, badly referenced the original writing.
I mean seriously, if I have to read a friggin’ book to understand this song (which I’ve heard a 100 times already thanks to craptastic radio), then maybe it’s just bad lyrics to begin with.

Seems that any song that can generate so much controversy must be worth something. Pretty easy to get for those of us with half a brain…otherwise stick with the head banging stuff that won’t cause any controversy because no one has a clue what the lyrics are anyway
Step outside the box people…accept it as something “different” from The Killers…I mean really…Are we human or are we dancer?

“Are we human or are we dancer?”
Meaning are we unique and not afraid to take a chance, or “dancer” following the same steps and the same routine of life.
“and sometimes I get nervous
when I see an open door”
Referring to taking a chance and stepping outside the box.

“My signs are vital” ??
What signs are vital? His vital signs are vital? That’s redundant. What’s vague is the state of his vital signs. Are they good? Are they bad? His hands are cold…does this mean his vital signs are bad, or are his hands cold despite having good vital signs?
I think this is bothering me more than the “dancer” nonsense.

Uh, Jon, you the “dancer” are a dumbass and what you recounted probably never happened. The song is not about you, it is about a Hunter S. Thompson quote. Look it up genius and stop thinking the world is all about you in your crazy little fantasies.
It is actually a very good song, and the lyrics have a bit of mystery, as any good rock song should, which leaves the listener room to take the song and make it personal.
The idea of the song is are we human (alive, living, choosing) or are we dancer (following a routine) that should clear up some of the wonderment above^.

All of the arguments regarding whether or not the chorus makes any sense depends entirely on the listener’s interpretation of Hunter Thompson’s quote. Misquote? Probably, but this is neither here nor there. What I am confused about, however, is why Flowers decided to go with with the lyric “Dancer,” singular, as opposed to “Dancers,” plural, since he asks, “Are WE Human?” WE = PLURAL. DANCER = SINGULAR.
Don’t call Flowers illiterate for the meaning of his lyrics, but rather for his horrendous use of grammar. Even Thompson’s original quote refers to “dancers” in the plural sense. It’s embarrassing. And fans will defend or ignore Flowers’ gaffe as an act of loyalty, when this just proves how *unintelligent successful bands can truly be.

This has certainly stirred up a vipers nest I came here looking for the meaning of the lyrics human or dancer and I always felt this had some deep meaning if you see it that way, I think this may have something to do with Thompson from what people have said although I have not read him.
As far as are the lyrics any good anything that causes this much controversy is always good for a band next they need to right a song that will be banned from all the major radio stations to have an even bigger hit, I can remember the controversy caused by The Beautifull South with their lyric dont marry her “have ” me (radio version) all the little old ladies went out and brought this nice song only to find when they got home that the lyrics had changed to dont marry her “fuck” me not quite the same song but the record version fitted better.
So to some up this is something a little deeper than face value if you want it to be but none the less a pretty good song getting loads of airplay and causing lots of contoversy to keep it in public view and consequently creating loads of sales ALL HAIL THE GODS OF SPIN

Its sad that we must be so black and white in this world. All this arguing and bitter word being spread over a song.
Music, is art, is up to you to determine the meaning of.
The artist will have a meaning, and the listeners will have many interpretations.
To those who are curious about the quote and so forth, I found an explanation on yahoo answers by someone.
And I quote,
“Hunter S. Thompson meant that the US was making people afraid of stepping out of place and following their own beat. He was saying that people were only following the steps they were taught, and were also taught not to change them. In the song “Human” one of the lines is “Some times I get nervous when I see an open door”. By this he meant that he is afraid to take different opportunities when they are presented to him, because living in the US has made us all afraid to go against what we’ve thought for all our lives. ”
You however are free to have your own opinion

its annoying because i think i would have really liked this song if the main lyric didn’t irritate me so much
i think all this stuff about hunter thompson has calmed me a little because now i can seem to make sense of it, but brandon has made it far too difficult for the normal listening
i keep trying to explain to people about “human” and “dancer” not being a grammatical fault but actually making some kind of sense, but it is very hard to explain
and to be honest, its a song, and people are getting pissed off about it because no one can really understand why it couldnt just have been “dancers”
i think then everyone would actually be able to discuss whether it is a good song or not
i cant quite make my mind up about it
i still love th ekillers though
i saw them at leeds, and wow

In response to the grammar thing: It’s dancer and not dancers because it human and not humans. He is refering to them both as whole, singular, not individual parts which would make it plural.
oliver | Dec 13, 2008 | Reply
As I am from Switzerland, I tried to translate the lyrics to German to understand it better.
Now I can hear someone who is trapped on the “platform of surrender”, with a heart still beating, but hand that are cold already – someone who gave up and says “so long” to everything he cared. It touches me deeply.
I agree that its confusing that they sing “dancer” and not “dancers”. I understand dancer as a more poetic word for string puppet.
What I had to know: would someone in this dark situation encourage us to follow him or not? One of the key sentence is “cut the cord”. But it’s ambiguous. It can mean: the cord to the world, or simply each cord that lead to him or the cord that forces to dance. Regardless, I feel this song helps me to remember one question before its too late:
Are we human or are we dancer(s)?
My thanks and deep respect for this song
Oliver

I wonder if the folks who have a problem with the grammatic accuracy of the line “are we dancer” also have a problem with Joni Mitchell’s line “We are starburst” in the song “Woodstock.” It’s called poetry, people. Poetry grants artistic license.

I’m a human dancer too and I love this song! Lyrics, like poetry, are meant to be open to interpretation, and for me, he is not saying that “dancer” is less than human, but BETTER than human, more elevated than merely human. And it is true, that dancing is a creative and often blissful thing that takes one “out of oneself” in a good way. Often when tangoing with someone, I have actually thought “are we human or are we dancer?” MH

i think the interpretation about the song being about either being free or in line is right but i think it needs to be flipped:
i think when they say are we human or are we dancer, they mean are we just like every other person (human) or do we step to the tune of our own beat (dancers)
this makes sense, and explains why they used dancer instead of dancers, because dancers we mean just like any other dancer instead of SINGULAR person

I’m going to throw a spanner in the works. Does he mean are we human or are we machine. He has cut the human cord and hands are cold, refers to a system. Alexander Rodchenko painted The Dancer in 1914 in futuristic style, cutting up the body into the robotic shapes of the machine world.
I don’t think it is a literal dancer. But who knows……..

If you actually did some research, you would’ve discovered that is was actually a remark that Hunter S. Thompson has made before.
“Are we human or are we dancer” means that are we human, with our own individual thoughts and feelings. And dancer refers to being like one of many, all the same with no individuality.
The phrase is asking if we are free with our own thoughts or are we restricted to alike. Next time before you call something an ‘illiterate pile of rubbish’ you should try doing some research.
J | Jan 1, 2009 | Reply
It means if we’re human, with our own individual thoughts and feelings or if we are dancers, all alike.
This remark was made by Hunter S. Thompson, and I’m sure that The Killers explained this in one of their blogs or interviews.
J | Jan 1, 2009 | Reply
It’s dancer. If you actually bothered to do some research, The Killers explained in one of their interviews that is was indeed ‘dancer’ not ‘denser’
J | Jan 1, 2009 | Reply
You are half right here, literally it’s not referring to real dancers.
The phrase “Are we human or are we dancer’ refers to a comment that journalist Hunter S. Thompson made about the new generation. It means if we’re human, individual with our own thoughts, or like dancers, all alike without individuality. To ‘cut the cord’ refers to strings on a puppet, and in this case the puppet refers to us, people. He’s telling us to be free with our own thoughts rather than ‘dancer’s who do not have their own opinions.

It doesnt matter if they say dancer or denser the important thing is that is an amazing song. it is a song that you can really dance too and if you can do that then who cares im glad it doesnt make much sense. Does everything in life really have to have some deep meaning look at many great poets. they get hi write a bunch of mumbo jumbo and people find some deep meaning in it that doesnt mean they arent great peices of poetry but seriously people stop trying to find a deep meaning and reason behind everything. Take life easy and just dance. Woah i sound like a hippy lol.

Darryl its a pity you are an idiot. you cant just choose what songs should replace others in songs written by professional musicians for god sake. The song has a distinctive meaning, replacing the word ‘dancer’ with ‘cancer’ completely changes its meaning and makes NO sense at all if you consider the rest of the songs lyrics. SO no Changing the word ‘dancer’ with ‘cancer’ would not improve the song at all. pity. To JOE and UPSET, i can tell that neither of you really have much depth to you, did you consider at least googling the meaning before shouting your mouths off like morons? just curious. gosh.

According to the supporting lyrics of “Are we human, or we dancer” simply means are we a mere reflection of what society wants us to be, or are we those who have the devotion to step out and seek what we desire. Dancer is used both grammatically incorrectly and metaphorically (but hey its a song, and it rocks). The metaphorical meaning of Dancer I’m assuming is one who dances to his own rhythm. What I do love about this song is the debate its stirred, which is only helping this song become even more popular. Whatever you take out of this track is up to you…for me, its a damn good song, and the message attach to it is also very important….”Finding who you really are is life’s biggest mystery…when you do, you’ll be able to figure out whether you’re like everyone else, or are you unique”
Emok | Jan 7, 2009 | Reply
What i think the song means is that ; “Are we human or are we dancer” it’s asking us whether we are humans who lead our own life with freedom or whether you are a dancer who leads his/her life following the beat.

this song reminds me so much of what i go through every day im a dancer and i hardly feel human when im at dance…. dance envelopes your life you get sucked in and its so hard to get out. i dont get to do the things a average teenager would and i loose my friends. it may not be the accual song meaning but that to me is what i think of it
@my interpretation | Jan 8, 2009 | Reply
Think you are complicating this, and getting it a little backward. Its simple, “are we human?” are we alive, do we think for ourselves etc etc. “or are we dancer” are we just moving to the beat just like everyone else? are we just puppets being controlled like everyone else? “cut the cord” translation: stop being a dancing puppet like pinocchio, cut yourself free and do what YOU want, be real,be a human being, be unique etc etc. Got it?
in simple terms, dont be a pinocchio, be a real boy!!! Gosh!

I was listening to 107.1 FM in New York and heard this song, Human. I had no idea who the artist is, nor was it mentioned after it played by the radio station. It really grabbed my attention, unlike so much trash on the air these days. I wrote down a couple sentences while it played, and did a google search ending with the word “lyrics”. Presto!!!, I got the artist instantly. I place little meaning on the message of songs, rather how it makes me feel listening to the tunes. To each his own. I love it! I just finished downloading it and will be burning it to a CD.

Using the singular, and grammatically incorrect, term ‘dancer’ actually exposes what is arguably at the core of this amazing track.
Are you going to listen to the ’system’ that controls you and call-out the error, or just let yourself go and accept it as another human’s expression.
Cut the cord and be happy.

grace, virtue, good, romance, devotion are all Godly and do teach us all we know
no message so is Jesus alive (heart beating)?
so is he mad at religion about being a religious puppet (dancer) and turning away or has he seen the light and is on his knees looking for Jesus (the answer)?

You are all way off, Hunter S. Thompson? Not even close. Clearly the song is about “Who’s The Boss?”, specifically I refer to the chorus,
“Are we human, or are we danza?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold,
and I’m on my knees looking for Tony Danza,
are we human, or are we Danza”
As a side note, “sometimes I get nervous when I see an open door”, refers to the episode where Tony accidently sees Angela in the shower when he opens the shower door.

On the band’s official website, the biography section states that Flowers is singing “Are we human, or are we dancer?” and also says that the lyrics were inspired by a disparaging comment made by Hunter S. Thompson.[10] In an interview with Rolling Stone, Flowers said that he was irritated over the confusion: “It’s supposed to be a dance song, [the beat] goes with the chorus…If you can’t put that together, you’re an idiot. I just don’t get why there’s a confusion about it.”

I can’t believe how much debate and discussion there is about 1 small line. But, that being said, I thought I should add to it anyway.
Think about the line more introspectively “Are we human etc.” can be read as if we are considering ouselves and asking the question “In my soul am I a human or am I a dancer?”
But all this debate is purely speculation, because you will only know the intent behind the lyrics if the Author of the song explains it.
Personally I just like the sound of the music, but unfotunately the statement is a bad reflection on good dancers. They spend a lot of effort pushing the boundaries and testing all posibilities and take things a lot further than a lot of us “humans”.
Ironically, in comparision I am sitting here on my butt, typing an addition to a long debate about something that I have no expertise or background knowledge. So I think we should all kick our own butts, get out of our chairs and do something physical, challenging and/or rewarding. Maybe something like Dancing?????
oldGuy | Feb 14, 2009 | Reply
Believe it or not, I have just heard this song recently. Please excuse me, as I’m from an older generation. It’s very catchy and it stuck in my head, but the ‘are we dancer’ bit caused me to stop and try and find out what the hell he is talking about. Without it, I would have dismissed it as just another obstuse set of lyrics. Little did I realise the debate that has been raging on about these lyrics.
Discovering it was a Hunter S Thompson quote, who shot himself in the head in 2005, the meaning of the lyrics become clear. If you look at it in that context, the lyrics are far from meaningless. In fact, it’s quite well written.
For example, the first verse to me is about Hunter Thompson facing his immminent death. ‘up to the Platform of Surrender’ – metaphorically walking up to the hanging Platform, ‘Open Door’ – the trapdoor, and ‘Cut the Cord’ – the action of releasing the trapdoor (or in Thompson’s case, pull the trigger). Add in the nervousness, closing the eyes and clearing the heart, then surely there can be no other meaning.
I won’t go further. But if a song can get you to stop and think about its lyrics, discuss and debate it, then it has risen above the everyday. Those who dismiss it, have done it a disservice.

I’ve enjoyed reading the debate about the lyrics, which were a mystery to me to the point that I wanted to find out more about them. They are obviously deep and meaningfull and better than some of the meaningless drivel we hear from most songs that I hear on the radio nowadays. I’m definiely going to buy their CD and play at full volume and Dance!!
Dermie | Feb 23, 2009 | Reply
Agree with you there OldRocker.
Hunter Thompson would have loved the controversy this has evoked, but he would have despaired that maybe he was right. That maybe there is a generation of dancers out there who can’t think for themselves – those that hate lyrics that are a little bit ambiguous and challenging. Those who automatically say ‘this is dance music, therefore it is crap’.
Isn’t it brilliantly ironic that those jumping up and down about the missing S on dancer, are actually marking themselves as Dancers.
A brilliant piece of songwriting.

You are all only expressing your own opinions, which is fine but some of you think that your opinions are THE TRUTH and you have to defend them and fight others with different opinions. If the lyrics speak to some of a deeper meaning, so be it. Perhaps some sense that there is more to life and ourselves than it seems and these lyrics remind them of that.

I am from the 60s generation and I think the Killers are one of the few valid bands to arrive on the music scene since the SEVENTIES. No one has had anything to say of any import since then, but the Killers are unique. Their music has a different sound (for a change), and their lyrics have some depth. It’s a real pity that you can’t think past the voices at the other end of your cell phones. Pity. Just a pity.

I loved this song the moment i heard it. I thought they were saying dancers and I puzzled over the meaning for some time. Then I began to appreciate it as poetry and saw the symbolism in the lyrics and it began to make sense to me. Are we human moving to our own beat or are we objects moving in sync? Are we alive or dead? Have we allowed ourselves to be controlled by the system so much that we’ve become like puppets on a string?
Great song, good listening, great lyrics.

It is my opinion that this song is saying “Are we human, or are we dancer?” because dancers follow a routine, and are slightly robotic. So as he’s saying goodbye to things that make us human and unique, he’s asking if we are, indeed, becoming more mechanical.

It’s always interesting how people think to interpret the lyrics to a song (in particular the individual words) without first taking the step of asking the person who wrote it. The writer states quite clearly that the word in ‘dancer’ in an interview. Get it clear in your heads that that is what he wrote and what he sings. The song is about thinking like and being an individual and not a sheep. Sheep follow the first one of them that makes a move, eg like a dancer, and if that means that the whole flock goes over a cliff, so be it. There are some countries in the world where a large proportion of its population who follow there leaders blindly even fighting wars they had no real right to start. ‘My sign is vital’ seems to convey that he/she as a person is vital as in important in the scheme of things. ‘My hands are cold’ I think indicates that he/she is frightened of the bigger picture, the unknown, and who today is afraid of something?
This song may not necessarily be the normal killers but for those of us who do get outside of our boxes occasionally it is a thought provoking song and I, for one, agree with the lyrics and try my best to not be afraid of too much and to get outside of my box as often as possible. After all “to live in fear, is to only half live”.
