Alejandro Music Video Meaning:Lady Gaga Steven Klein – The director for Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” video recently attempted to explain what he and the pop star were going for with their controversial clip. He says that the mini film was not created just to cause problems, and that there is real meaning behind some of the scenes that depict religion in a light that is not all that flattering. Several religious groups have already denounced the video. The director, Steven Klein, had, at least until this latest piece, never directed a music video before in his career. After he saw Gaga perform, he thought that her style was right up his alley and decided that he wanted to direct a music video for her if he could get the chance.
He said that her performance felt like art did in the 90′s. He went on to say that she approached him about doing the song that she had chosen, but that he was looking for something with more narrative in the lyrics. Eventually, the song brought a number of visions to him regarding what the video could possibly look like.
Klein worked very close with Gaga on the imagery, stating that the two of them would bounce ideas off of each other.
“I had a vision and story for the film, she reacted to it, then we both collaborated. We shot in Los Angeles on April 30, 2010,” Klein wrote.
“[It is] about a woman’s desire to resurrect a dead love and who can not face the brutality of her present situation. The pain of living without your true love.”

Moi,you said it!The beauty of surreal art is that it does not explain itself,it allows its audience to “get” what they desire to get from a piece of art.Although I was not aware of all the symbolism involved in the music video,I felt the homosexual supportive theme the first time I watched it.And now with all the people expressing their perception I like Alejandro even more!
There is just one minor thing that I like to know what others think about.What’s with the kind of angry guy in the uniform towards the end of the clip?The one who is watching everything and looks bitter?

how about this thought: for steven klein, it had a message. for lady gaga, it was a message her voice could share. for us? it’s what hits us when we watch it. i know the first time i watched it, i didn’t begin to understand it. still don’t, but the symbolism of pain/confusion/hurt/longing certainly comes through loud and clear. so. perhaps we should agree that art touches each person differently; some will “get it” and others won’t. for those who “get it” … what they get is individual, based on THEIR life, THEIR experiences, THEIR perception. we all “get” a different message.
i find it entirely acceptable that my view, and your view, and even yours, o’hater, are different. i find it entirely acceptable that each view is valid. what i don’t find acceptable is that something that’s offered as thought-provocation should be used to cast derision or disdain on anyone else.

i think gaga is expressing a different message…….in the begining there is what seems to be a room full of homosexual men (all asleep) and one man(who is awake) symbolizing that he is curious about his homosexuality while the others are uninterested.(in my opinion) putting her heart to rest was in turn putting her love for god to rest,alejandro means alexander in spansh so why isnt there a alexander or one heterosexual male shes referring to in the video? in one scene she’s dressed in a red latex nun suit and says “stop, please just let me go…….alejandro” while looking towards the sky. giving us the hint that “alejandro” is god. then she swallows the rosery, and in turn finding her new faith. while in bed she is also connected to strings as if she were a puppet. the male on the bed beside her has his gun lain directly on his crotch symbolizing he is sexualy interested in her and constantly pulls at the strings to get her to react sexually but she is bound by her faith so she doesnt react (reason for the nun suit)
lady gaga is trying to express her love for the gay community but her faith wouldnt let her so she put her love for her old religion to rest and found a new awakening where shes accepted, bt spiritually its alot deeper than this
the upside down cross isnt satanic it is called the petrine cross which is the symbol of saint peter. when he went to be crucified he asks that the cross be turned upside down because he felt unworthy of being crucified in the way of jesus. so by her wearing the petrine cross symbolizes her feeling unworthy of salvation due to her sexual orientation

Actually, to all you people saying “EXPLAIN THE SYMBOLISM, BECAUSE THERE IS NO SYMBOLISM!” it’s full of symbolism. I’ll explain the symbolism. The name Alejandro is a metaphor itself, for gender roles. Alejandro sounds like a masculine name, but in the video Alejandro is a gay man. Throughout the video Gaga symbolizes all the things that gay people have to go through. The video itself is just about how society expects all men to be the same, and they arent allowed to be gay. In the beginning there’s a funeral and Gaga is carrying a heart with the letter ‘A’ on it for Alejandro. This symbolizes the death of gender roles and the LGBT community killing the societies view on gender roles. All the men have the same haircut and are dancing exactly the same, to symbolize how society wants all men to be the same, and they arent allowed to be different and different is wrong. One of the most controversial parts seems to be when Gaga is ‘dry humping’ the men. This symbolizes the fantasies of gay men. The men are enjoying Gaga(who symbolizes a man in this scene) humping them and they are imagining Gaga is a man. That’s hard to explain on a computer but I think I made it clear. Also, Gaga swallowing the rosary beads symbolizes how society tries to shove religion down the throats of gay people, saying its evil and Gaga is trying to make herself holy. The war in the backround throughout the whole video symbolizes the Stone Wall Riots, when gays were killed for being gay. And, the men with Nazi uniforms symbolize how Nazi’s put people in groups and judged them for who they were. At the end, you see that Gaga and the man on the bed with her are connected to strings, like puppets. This symbolizes how society wants to control everyone and wants everyone to be a puppet. The world needs to open their minds a little bit and maybe they’ll understand you Gaga, but for now..YOUR LITTLE MONSTERS UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING!<3
I am very sad that everyone says such angry things on both sides; the people who claim to love Gaga say negative things about the other side, and vice versa. A lot of the symbolism is not actually related to the church. The upside down cross and the one-eye thing that she does are symbols of the Illuminati, which is a central theme between all Gaga videos. And the risque dancing are not meant to be just sex scenes… they are hard to watch because there is the underlying theme of gay rights. The video is about her denying her love BECAUSE of religion. The bad sex scenes and dancing is because they are trying to give up and deny their sexuality in order to be accepted into religion. I dont see the swallowing of the rosary as disrespectful… she is trying to bring Godliness inside of herself. No matter what, the fact that we all feel so strongly about the video shows that Lady Gaga and Stephen Klein are doing their jobs
The story may reflect the post world war era: Soldiers, marching in the first scene. During that moment, her lover;husband died: Funeral, coffin. So she’s left alone to fend for herself. She became a nun. During that process, she was exploited by the occupation soldiers. And in my analysis it’s World war I on the Nazis. So the troops gang-raped by these soldiers. After all these events that happens she felt deceived by god bringing this upon her. That is where she starts to disregard religion: Swallow of the Rosary. She never look back after that living in comdemnation; being a prostitute to these war soldiers.

This is what i think…if shes heart broken n tryng resurrect a dead love…that would explain the religious stuff….maybe this person has passed away n shes angry with God…maybe they broke up, again she could be angry with God. The men in her video all looking the same may represent the fact that every man she encounters doesnt stand out to her…they r black n white figures in life. When a person is heart broken for whatever reason the color in their life disappears, everything is pale n bland n basic. The fact that shes humping and/or sexing these guys might mean that she just doesnt care anymore like shes trying to fill an empty void in her life with meaningless sex.
But thats just my opinion….i love lady gaga and the only one who can truly explain in detail is her.

Everyone claims to understand and appreciate what they call amazing symbolism and hidden metaphors, etc, etc. But no one has actually gone into detail and explained WHAT the symbolism is.
YES, there is a funeral, but other than that the video comprises Lady GaGa doing some risque (to say the very least) things.
Unless someone can explain where the genius is, I’m inclined to think that everybody is just pretending to “get” this video just for the sake of their loyalty to GaGa.

Gaga did not make Alejandro to top the telephone video. Her motivations are not as pedantic as that. She does not do things just to get talked about and she is very introspective about her motivations and her creative process. She loves her fans and she loves to perform and she is fu¢king awesome.
I have also had enough of these Gaga haters passing themselves off as “huge Gaga fans” emotionally crushed and disillusioned because of the Alejandro video.

I think the video was a beautiful piece. I got out of it a lot of things, her love for the gay community was a huge thing that had spoken to me. I greatly respect the director Klein and Gaga for making such an impactful music video. Very loud, and I know it the video is precious to a lot of people. Keep on doing what you’re doing, it’s beautiful.
